What is the Gracie Humaita lineage and why does it matter?
The Gracie Humaita Legacy
Gracie Humaita is one of the world’s most respected and historic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineages. Founded by Grand Master Hélio Gracie and carried forward by Master Royler Gracie, a four-time BJJ World Champion, it represents generations of proven instruction, technical excellence, and tradition.
Today, that tradition continues at Gracie Woodbridge. Professor Dan Moroney holds a 6th Degree Black Belt directly under Master Royler Gracie. As a result, our academy is a proud and authentic Gracie Humaita affiliate.
Authentic Gracie Humaita Instruction
In addition, our entire coaching team has trained under Professor Dan. This creates a consistent approach to instruction rooted in the Gracie Humaita curriculum.
Because of this, students learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through a proven system built on technique, discipline, and tradition. Whether your goal is self-defence, fitness, competition, or personal growth, you’ll be part of a welcoming community.
Part of a Global Tradition
Furthermore, students become connected to a global network of Gracie Humaita academies. These academies share the same commitment to excellence, respect, and lifelong learning.
Ultimately, you’re not simply learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. You’re becoming part of a tradition that has helped generations of students grow through the art.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu effective for real-world self-defense?
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Effective for Self-Defence
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely recognized as an effective martial art for real-world self-defence. It teaches practical techniques that help you stay calm under pressure, escape dangerous situations, and control an opponent. Most importantly, you can use leverage and technique rather than relying on size or strength.
The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Approach to Self-Defence
More importantly, the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system we teach was developed with self-defence as its foundation. Historically, long before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became a competitive sport, the Gracie family refined these techniques for real-life situations. As a result, self-defence remains an important part of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system today.
At Gracie Woodbridge, we teach both the self-defence principles of Gracie Humaita Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the technical skills used in sport BJJ. This means students can develop practical self-defence skills while also learning the techniques, strategies, and discipline of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition.

How do I get started at Gracie Woodbridge? What should I expect on my first visit?
Getting started is simple! Contact us at (905) 265-0950, or visit here to book a free introductory class. Starting with this will give you a chance to meet our team, tour the facility, try a class, and ask all your questions before signing up!
For your first class, wear comfortable clothing. This means a t-shirt and track pants work perfectly. All you have to do is bring a water bottle and an open mind. You do not need to purchase a uniform (called a gi) before you try your first session; we can guide you on that once you decide to join.

Our students and instructors love introducing new people to BJJ and Muay Thai, and we take pride in making first-timers feel at home immediately. Most new students tell us the hardest part was walking through the door. After that, everything gets easier and the fun part begins!
